My 4 year old son is car mad. He loves the movie Disney Pixar cars. He loves playing with toy cars and race tracks. Toy cars are probably the toys he plays with the most.He even has a car race track to go in the bath!
We have lots of different car themed toys so in this article I will go through some of the toys we have and the ones he likes the most as well as toys he has played with at friends houses and playgroups.

Toy Cars
We have a huge box of toy cars that my little boy loves to get out and play with. We have a huge mixture of toy cars from bigger ones to hotwheels and matchbox. I think because my son loves the movie Cars, many of the cars have characters and personalities and as well as whizzing along race tracks and down ramps they also talk to each other.
Hotwheels cars like the ones features are excellent quality and you can get pack of different sizes which makes great gifts for car mad 4 year olds. |
Disney Pixar Cars
He has most of the cars from Disney cars which he loves to play with. They are expensive to buy a whole set. We got ours from the Disney toy store along with Mack so it may be worth looking to see if they still have these in stock.
If they love Disney Cars they will probably also love the Radiator Springs playsets available. The playset opposite is Flo's V8 Cafe which is a popular hangout in Radiator Springs. It also transforms into a grand raceway. Bear in mind it only comes with one car so if you want to use the raceway to actually race cars you may want to get another Disney Pixar car to go with it.

Mack
Mack is another one of my sons favourite characters from the Disney cars movie. He loves playing with Mack.
Mack is a transporter so if you can't find a Mack you like, consider getting another car transporter where kids will enjoy driving their cars onto the transporter and transporting them around.

Lego Juniors Cars Set
At age 4, my eldest son used to love both cars and also construction toys such as lego. Recently lego have bought out a new juniors range which have standard sized lego and are designed for kids aged 4 to 7. They are designed so that younger children find the sets easier to build.
If you have a car mar 4 year old who also likes lego, they will love the car rally set which is part of the lego juniors range. |
Car Race Tracks
There are tons of car race tracks to choose from. There are all different kinds of tracks to choose from including hot wheels tracks, mini scalextric sets for young users and tracks which you can build yourself too. Check out some options below.
Car Track
If the 4 year old you know loves cars, he might enjoy a race car track that you can construct yourself like car trax.
The track is easy to assemble and if you get more track you can also assemble it in different layouts. The track featured comes with a lifting bridge and a turntable which is great for extra play. The car it comes with is battery operated and will whizz round the track. |
Hotwheels Tracks
We have used some hotwheels tracks in the past which have been great. I prefer to find hotwheels tracks which don't use batteries (some of them do and some of them don't). This is because its a pain to keep having to change the batteries when they wear out.
I like the set opposite. It looks like lots of fun. Race two cars against each other. You can have two people operating the slam activitated buttons to race the cars. |
It hits my criteria of not needing any batteries. This is a great advantage of any toy in my opinion.
Bear in mind the track only comes with one car, so you may need to get another car to go with the toy if you want to race two cars.

Micro Scaletrix
4 years old might be a nice age to get a first scalextric track. If you're considering this then there are tracks designed for the younger user like the micro scalextric track featured opposite.
The vehicles in the track featured are designed to be more resistant to tumbles and they have stronger magnets so they are easier to keep on the corners on the circuit. The tracks are also easier to connect and disconnect. |
Remote Control Car
My son has a remote control car which he loves. He does find it a bit frustrating now and again when it hits a wall or something gets in his way but this doesn't stop him from playing with it lots.
If you’re going to buy a remote control car look for one which has easy controls as there is a lot to think about when using the controller. They have to think which button does what and try not to hit anything while they are driving. |
The other thing to be aware of is that if you leave a remote control car turned on when it’is not in use they will eat the batteries. So always remember to turn the controls off.
Car Bath Toys
Perhaps the 4 year old you know already has lots of the toys mentioned and you are still stuck for what to get him. Don't forget the bath. Kids this age still love bath toys. In fact my own 4 year old will take in lots of his standard cars into the bath which is fine. However, you can also get all kinds of car bath toys including Disney Pixar cars which are designed for the bath. There are also bath stickers which are in the shape of cars and will stick onto the bath tiles and the wall. My son's favourite bath toy is the hot wheels track featured below.
Hotwheels Bath Toy
My son received this hot wheels track that you can play with in the bath for his 4th birthday.
I really like it as you can play with it either in or out of the bath which is great. Another plus point for me is that it's a hot wheels track that doesn't take batteries which is a good job seeing as it's used in water! It floats quite nicely in our bath and both my boys (age 4 and 8) have enjoyed playing with it. . |
We bought ours from Argos so it may be worth checking price there and at other stores to make sure you're not paying more than you should.
Other Vehicles
Boys who like playing with cars will probably like other vehicles too. Think fire engines, dump trucks (in fact any trucks), diggers and buses. They will probably love trains and train tracks as well.
Other Toys
If they like car toys that race they might also enjoy other toys which have aspects of racing such as marble runs where they can race two marbles down different tracks.
They also may like other car themed toys such as car themed puzzles, games, books and activity packs.
Other ideas include ride on cars such as the plasma car (see the page on
ride on toys for kids) and pedal tractors.
