Pirate Lego
If you have a boy like mine, they will enjoy playing and constructing with lego. If they also have an obsession with pirates what better toy to get than a pirate lego set. The set featured is is a Jake and the Neverland Pirate set which is a spin off from the cartoon. But even if your child hasn't watched the cartoon, if they like pirates they will loves this set.

I would imagine most 4 year olds would need some help building the set but it's a great set to play with after 4 year olds have had built it. It has lots of figures and accessories such as
palm tree, treasure chest, shovel. One of the most fun features is the cannon with a shooter function.

Pop Up Pirate
Pop up Pirate is a classic and simple game that young children enjoy playing. You have to put the swords in the barrel and see which one will make the pirate pop up.
The winner can be the person that makes the pirate pop up first. It's good for teaching children to take turns and great fun for them when the pirate pops up.

Pirate Ships
There are lots of pirate ships to suit different ages and budgets.
I have chosen to features a playmobil pirate ship my boys have loved it everytime they have played with playmobil. It's excellent quality and its playsets are designed with lots of detail and accessories that really facilitate imaginative play. It's a large ship and the thing I really love about the pirate ship featured is that it can float on water. |
It has some great features like the working winch on the deck which can load the ship with goods and treasure. There's also a working anchor and a hiding place for the treasure. The ship does take a while to assemble so if you're giving it as a gift, it may be worth doing before you give it to the child in question.
If you have a Jake and Neverland Pirates fan, there are also some great themed ships. There is obviously the lego duplo set featured above but you should also check out the Jack and the Neverland Pirate Bucky ship. This ship fires cannon balls and has some good features for imaginative pirate play. Jake can escape down the slide if he needs to and there's a lookout too. The ship has wheels to move it around. It has holes in so it's not one you can use in the water - land use only.

Pirate Dress Up
Get 4 year old's imagination firing buy giving them clothes, hats, maps and accessories so they can really pretend to be pirates.
My boys love getting dressed up and we actually made a pirate costume for my older son by using felt and card as an eye patch with elastic to hold it in place. We used a piece of black material as a bandana. For the outfit we used a stripy t-shirt and rolled up jeans. We had a waistcoat which goes with another dress up outfit that we can use for our pirate outfit. But you can easily make a waistcoat by cutting the sleeves off an old t-shirt and cutting it down the middle. The rough edges make it perfect for a pirate outfit. We had a great time making the pirate outfit together and my son wore it for a relatives birthday party. |
If you prefer not to make one, a lot of the accessories are very cheap to buy. You can also get really reasonable pirate costumes like the Melissa and Doug one featured. We don't have this costume but I do have the doctors outfit by Melissa and Doug and I have found it be excellent quality.
A pirate costume is a good one to have as for some reason pirate and princess parties are very popular and so it's good to have as a fancy dress option for a birthday party if you need it. |
Pirate Jigsaws
Jigsaws are great for 4 year olds. I enjoy doing them with my son. They develop concentration skills, problems solving skills and give a sense of achievement when completed. If you have a child who loves pirates, why not get a pirate themed jigsaw. For 4 year olds I would look for jigsaws from around 24 pieces as average. My son likes doing puzzles which are 12 to 24 pieces but he has jsut turned 4. More advanced puzzlers could be aiming to do 48 pieces before they hit their 5th birthday.
